The very definition of irony

As much as I usually bitch about people not upgrading their WordPress installs and then getting hacked, guess what I did? I must have left this one alone for AGES and, lo and behold, I find that everything in here is infected with malicious scripts.

Hardcore cleaning time!

Rip and tag your MP3s like a pro

So a few months ago I finally caught up to the rest of the music-enjoying world and got an iPod. It was great for all the music already on my computer through entirely legal purchases, however I do also have a reasonably large collection of CDs that I found myself staring at in dread. Having a mountain of plastic staring me in the face I just couldn’t verify chewing up all that bandwidth BitTorrenting it all down, so I dug into some open source audio ripping tools. WS-FTP LE

I’m sick of having to scrounge around through random college IT department websites to find an old installer for WS-FTP LE that doesn’t simply point me to ipswitch’s website about how they don’t offer it because there’s a shiny, new, and supposedly more user-friendly version we’re supposed to use, and eventually pay for.

Well screw that. If you’re anything like me you’ve gotten use to the sparse, less than user-friendly UI of LE and you actually know what you’re doing. So, in the hopes that it will help more people avoid scrounging around the internets like I’ve been doing these many years, I offer the hallowed WS-FTP LE installer in the version unencumbered by redirections to ipswitch.

Download (about 700k)

Now be mindful of the original license [only to be used for personal or educational use, etc, etc] and enjoy one of the most lightweight, unfriendly, and useful FTP app out there.

PS: I’ve since been directed to OldVersion.com which offers many older versions of awesome programs like WS_FTP

PSP HomeBrew: Get your PSP Ready with Lumines

So I’ve dragged my feet long enough about getting HomeBrew up and running on my PSP. There were always concerns about bricking my PSP, not being able to run the newest games, or the horrible “race to swap memory sticks” method of running HomeBrew that used to be necessary. But now there are some wonderful people who have done things like create custom firmware compatible with the latest firmwares, and make the magic battery to boot your PSP in service mode, load any firmware, and even recover bricked PSPs!

There are a few methods of getting your PSP ready for HomeBrew but the majority boil down to the fact that you have to have a really old version of firmware, or one of the magic batteries which have just been released. The method I’ve used, and am about to outline, only requires that you have a PSP with firmware up to, or including version 3.50 and a copy of Lumines that is not the Greatest Hits version. [it's patched] You shouldn’t have a problem finding a copy secondhand on eBay, on the used shelf at your favorite gaming store, or in a bargain bin god knows where.
